An unexpected purchase. A shop opened of "SDCC Spawn" without any pictures or details and before it was revealed by Todd. The PO was priced at normal figure and I thought, why not.
As luck would have it, it turns out to be a Megafig. And the seller honor the PO price, thanks seller.
Now, for one of the most unpopular Spawn figure revealed ever in the new line. Manga Spawn.
The most comments during the revealed was the striking and cheap-look blue color. And I would have to agree to some extend, a darker color or a darker shade of blue would've been better.
Make it simple, if you can't get past the color and the design, he's no longer your cup of tea. But if you're still okay, let's proceed.
The figure is huge but not as heavy as Megafig Violator which is understandable as he is not as bulky. He comes with a red cloth cape which, even if it doesn't look that good, can easily be replaced as it is attached to the peg s of his shoulder pads
He has a peg on his left arm which is an eyesore but it is to attach his shield. Yes, he comes with a shield and quite a few melee weapons.
Fully equipped. A shield, long cleaver, corseque, sword, 2 daggers and wrist blade. Sorry to disappoint, the weapons are made out of translucent soft plastics (the weapons are made out of painted translucent plastics) instead of hard plastic as I thought it would be. As you can see, the wrist blade already bend a little bit and the handle of his long weapons warped even just storing them on his back.
The sculpt of the figure is really well made, again, after you get past the paintjob.
Figure wise, it's a solid and sturdy figure. But on my copy at least, the right hip is looser and the left but this maybe due to the weight of the big boot. The shoulder joints are tight which really helps when he's handling his weapons.
The range of motion is quite limited but no more than other Spawn Megafigs. The shoulders are limited due to the shoulder pads, the hips are limited due to the design of the crotch. The elbows and knees are single jointed up to 45 degree bend. He comes with decent ankle rockers and ankle tilts (right is more limited than the left)
The number of weapons included is something I had always wanted for McFarlane figures. However the slight limitation of the articulations prevent him to fully utilizing the weapons.
Size wise, he's a decent megafig. The lack of bulkiness and weight are balanced by the accessories included.
Yes, paint scheme is not for everyone. But, knowing McFarlane, there bound to be a repaint or retool of this mold release in the future. The design in itself is well done, though the head sculpt could've been better. There are some limitation in terms of articulation but I've learned to live with that when it comes to McFarlane releases. Even more so when it's a megafig.
I have an issue of putting him in my Spawn display but that's mostly due to the paint scheme. I guess he will be with my 3 Mandarin Spawns
