Transformers Studio Series SS-103 Voyager Class Rhinox - Pictorial Review

We're getting closer to completing Rise of The Beast lineup under the Studio Series. Up next is the 3rd Maximal, Rhinox.

Review courtesy of Hasbro MY and Hasbro SG.

In Package

Numbered 103, Rhinox comes in a box similar to the rest of the SS. The artwork shown give a detailed look of his alt mode, which we don't really see clearly in the movie

He comes with Peruvian Jungle Discovery backdrop, the scene where the Autobots and all the Maximals meet.

Alt Mode

I don't have any expectation on how a mechanical rhino should look like but I must say I'm not hating this.

Personally I like the alt mode design and execution better compared to Cheetor and Airazor.

He comes in a bit of plain grey on most part of his body which I think is quite disappointing. A little bit more silver would've been better

The 'incomplete' look of his back fits his mechanical nature which is think is what Hasbro was going for.

Just like Cheetor, you don't get much movement in alt mode. Everything pegs together right which is a plus. The horn and tail are made out of rubber but not the soft kind

Looks good together. Now we need Primal!

Also, unlike Cheetor and Airazor, Rhinox comes with a bit more detailed textures on some parts of his body like the front legs. But together, Cheetor and Airazor looks more vibrant and less "plain"

Nicely scaled!

Would've been great if there's a peg on Rhinox to attach Arcee so we can reenact the scene from the movie.

Robot Mode

Transformation wise, mainly involves the upper body while the legs and hands are straightforward.

There's quite a lot of tone differences that you can see. Based on the promo pictures, he should've come with more brown paint but instead, quite a lot of unpainted grey plastic color on his upper body. If the same deco style of his hands is applied throughout his body, he would've look a lot better.

The headsculpt was done almost perfectly, a good reimagining of BW Rhinox. But he lacks 'life' due to the plastic color.

Minimal kibble

The joint are all tight (at least on my copy) which makes posing him quite easy and stable. The weakest joints I must say is the friction-based knee joints.. While you probably won't have issue standing him up, over time I'm guessing the knees will have problem. Small ratchet joints would've been better.

Despite his bulkiness, his articulation is not that bad. One thing I noticed from recent SS releases, they don't cheap out on waist and wrist swivels. Due to his bulkiness, there is slight limitation in terms of his shoulder joints but not that bad.

Just like in the movie [for a split seconds], he comes with a big hammer that can be stored in his back (using 5mm port)

While I would've preferred him to be wielding his double gatling guns, I can accept this as the weapon suits the style of the character.

He's half a head taller than Cheetor which is fine, having different height between the team. As far as the aesthetic goes, he fits right in with the other 2 Maximals (but really feels under-detailed compared to them)

I may remember differently but shouldn't Battletrap also be bulkier, just like Rhinox, following the movie?

Overall, I'm not at all disappointed by the recent SS ROTB releases.

Rhinox has a good bulk to him. The proportion and design are very well done (but slightly more deco is needed) and the QC is decent. While I don't have ROTB Mainline Rhinox in hand, SS version wins, no quesion about it
